Licence Requirements

The majority of municipalities and Regional Districts have dog licencing requirements.

All dogs must be licenced by 6 months of age, although some require a licence at 4 months.

There are many costs associated with animal control and the purchase of your yearly dog licence helps to offset these costs. Hopefully you will never need these services but if you do, we are here.

Some of the services your licence helps to fund;

  • 24hr emergency on call staff
  • A safe place for your pet to come if you have an emergency such as a car accident, fire or other unexpected crisis
  • Information hub where you can get advice on pet behaviur issues.

Dog licence fees must be renewed every January.

CITY OF DUNCAN

City of Duncan dog licenses can be purchased, renewed, and paid for online via:

City of Duncan Website, in person at City Hall (200 Craig Street)

Coastal Animal Control Services (2202 Herd Road). 

NORTH COWICHAN

North Cowichan dog licences can be purchased at:

Municipal Hall main office (7030 Trans Canada Highway) 

Coastal Animal Services (2202 Herd Rd). 

New licences require a completed application form, while renewals can be paid online via MyMuni or by mail.

COWICHAN VALLEY REGIONAL DISTRICT (CVRD)

Dog licenses for CVRD can be purchased at:

Duncan area: CVRD Office (175 Ingram St), Buckerfield’s, Coastal Animal Control Services (2202 Herd Rd)

Mill Bay: Laughing Llama, Kerry Park Recreation Centre.

Shawnigan Lake: Shawnigan Lake Community Centre.

Cobble Hill: Laughing Llama.

Cowichan Bay: Pier 66.

Ladysmith: Town of Ladysmith City Hall, Frank Jameson Community Centre.

Lake Cowichan: Cowichan Lake Recreation Centre.

LADYSMITH

Dog licenses for Ladysmith can be purchased at:

REGIONAL DISTRICT OF NANAIMO (RDN)
